DAHS Start of School Information

Welcome to Dimensions Academy High School! We are excited to work with you in our program. Throughout the year if you have any questions about the DA program feel free to reach out. This email will have a lot of information about the 2021-22 school year. Feel free to email me with any questions you have. ;) Sincerely, Meredith Aby-Keirstead Gifted and Talented Coordinator maby@isd271.org 952-806-7811 Schedules for Week 1 The two high schools have different schedules for the first day of school. The good thing is that this will allow us to be able to make sure the DA kids have a smooth transition back and forth between the schools. The bad thing is the KHS STEM students will miss meeting their advisory teacher and the JHS Humanities students will miss their Pep Fest. KHS First Week Schedule DA STEM students will miss their advisory time the first 2 days. I believe I am the advisor at KHS for all the DA students. ;) I will email them any information they will miss in advisory. When you get to Jefferson Mr. Hildebrandt (the middle school GT coordinator) will meet you at the front door and make sure you get to your period 1 classes on time! On Friday KHS will use the normal 6 period day schedule. On the first day of school I will meet Kennedy DA STEM students at the music door 2 to make sure they get on the bus to JHS. :) JHS First Day Schedule DA Humanities students will miss the pep fest on Day 1. Sorry! Hopefully other pep fests will be at the end of the day so you can participate. On Wednesday 9/8 you can go to the front of JHS to catch the DA shuttle to Kennedy after period 2. You won’t need to leave class early. On Thursday 9/9 you will need to leave period 2 early (9:45) to catch the DA shuttle to Kennedy. You will get a pass from me to use in the hallways. If you or your student is marked late accidentally because of DA transportation please email me and I will fix their attendance. Please talk to your teachers if you have a test or a special activity you are doing in class which would make it difficult for you to leave early so we can come up with a plan in advance. If you miss the shuttle, go to the main office and ask them to call transportation for you to see if the bus can return and pick you up. I don’t know if we will have enough bus drivers to do that, so if a bus is unable to return for you, you should go to the media center to work independently and email your teacher for what you should do. I will also give students a number for them to call me if they have transportation emergencies in case I can help.

5 Research-Backed Studying Techniques

5 Research-Backed Studying Techniques Teachers can guide students to avoid ineffective studying habits in favor of ones that will increase their learning outcomes. By Edward Kang, April 4, 2019 https://www.edutopia.org/article/5-research-backed-studying-techniques Too often people imagine that long hours of studying are the best path to being a model, straight-A student. Yet research shows that highly successful students actually spend less time studying than their peers do—they just study more effectively. Teachers can help all students learn to more effectively use the time they spend studying by sharing research-proven techniques. STUDY LESS, WITH GREATER INTENSITY In this era of social media and digital distractions, many students—and adults—do a lot of multitasking. But there is no such thing as successful multitasking, because much of the time spent is wasted on context switching, where the brain has to restart and refocus. G-Squared. Supporting Your Gifted LGBT Student

A parent recently shared this article with me and I thought I'd post it here to share with other parents, teachers, etc. https://www.sengifted.org/post/g-squared-supporting-your-gifted-lgbt-student G-Squared. Supporting Your Gifted LGBT Student Updated:  Jan 29, 2019 By Alessa Keener. We live in unprecedented times, where many Americans can proudly and safely live as out lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. One measure of progress is in the number of states that have marriage equality –15 states as of today and the District of Columbia. Despite the many positive steps our country continues to take to overcome discrimination and crimes against LGBTQ people, concerns still exist about the safety of our young people and their coming out process. Substance abuse, self-injury, homelessness, and suicide affect a disproportionate number of youth who identify as LGBT. When children grow up both gifted and LGBT, they oftentimes experience a
