DA STEM Update 3/23/2020

*Note 10th grade letter is below.

Dear 9th grade students and parents,

We hope this finds everyone healthy and ready to get back to learning on 3/30/2020. Our plan is to continue to have  instruction between 7:50 and 9:35 via Zoom. Attendance will be taken and just like before, arrangements for absences should be made prior to class time. Meredith and I will be “sitting in” on these Zoom sessions similar to what we regularly do. Please be very proactive if you have any issues with the technology or the material being covered.

Professor Weum has an updated syllabus as well as plans for this coming week posted on D2L. There is a link for students using Zoom as well as a link to her Zoom classroom. Additionally there is some homework and studying that needs to be completed by midnight of the 30th.

Professor Klapoetke also has an update on D2L. His plans are less specific because he is waiting for feedback from the students. If you have not responded to him, please do so before 10am tomorrow.

I can be reached by text anytime at 952-529-0541 or email at rskophammer@isd271.org. If you need to talk by phone please arrange a time by text (usually I can arrange for that very quickly).

Please monitor NCC on a regular basis—at a minimum twice a day. If you are having problems with NCC email or D2L try resetting your password.

Thanks,
Roger and Meredith

Dear 10th grade students and parents,

We hope this finds everyone healthy and ready to get back to learning on 3/30. Our plan is to continue to have  instruction between 7:50 and 9:35 via either Zoom or possible recorded lectures for Chemistry. Attendance will be taken and just like before, arrangements for absences should be made prior to class time. Meredith and I will be “sitting in” on these Zoom sessions or monitoring discussion boards or Chat Similar to what we regularly do. Please be very proactive if you have any issues with the technology or the material being covered.

Thank you all for completing the survey for Calculus. Patrick has provided answers to many of you concerns on D2L. Please take time to read through his answer and get started on the WebAssign homework due the week of the 30th. Patrick is planning on using Zoom during our regular class times. Also monitor NCC email for further updates.

Carolyn also has an update on her D2L page. She is planning on using Zoom but may use a combination of methods to depend on her child care needs. Regardless you will be working on chemistry during our normal course time. Agin, please monitor NCC emails as she will be posting an updated syllabus this week.

Sincerely,
Roger and Meredith

5 Research-Backed Studying Techniques

5 Research-Backed Studying Techniques Teachers can guide students to avoid ineffective studying habits in favor of ones that will increase their learning outcomes. By Edward Kang, April 4, 2019 https://www.edutopia.org/article/5-research-backed-studying-techniques Too often people imagine that long hours of studying are the best path to being a model, straight-A student. Yet research shows that highly successful students actually spend less time studying than their peers do—they just study more effectively. Teachers can help all students learn to more effectively use the time they spend studying by sharing research-proven techniques. STUDY LESS, WITH GREATER INTENSITY In this era of social media and digital distractions, many students—and adults—do a lot of multitasking. But there is no such thing as successful multitasking, because much of the time spent is wasted on context switching, where the brain has to restart and refocus. Consider the formula “work accomplished

G-Squared. Supporting Your Gifted LGBT Student

A parent recently shared this article with me and I thought I'd post it here to share with other parents, teachers, etc. https://www.sengifted.org/post/g-squared-supporting-your-gifted-lgbt-student G-Squared. Supporting Your Gifted LGBT Student Updated:  Jan 29, 2019 By Alessa Keener. We live in unprecedented times, where many Americans can proudly and safely live as out lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. One measure of progress is in the number of states that have marriage equality –15 states as of today and the District of Columbia. Despite the many positive steps our country continues to take to overcome discrimination and crimes against LGBTQ people, concerns still exist about the safety of our young people and their coming out process. Substance abuse, self-injury, homelessness, and suicide affect a disproportionate number of youth who identify as LGBT. When children grow up both gifted and LGBT, they oftentimes experience a
