Don’t let your child’s exceptional gifted education stop in middle school

Bloomington Public Schools has developed an innovative approach to gifted education at the high school level through Dimensions Academy High School.  Students can apply to be in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and/or the Humanities (English and Social Studies) strands.

DA HS STEM:
DA High School STEM is a partnership with Normandale Community College to provide an early college experience for 9th and 10th grade students who have exceptional academic skills and are ready for highly rigorous college-level curriculum prior to their eligibility for PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options) in grades 11-12.  This original program allows students to college from 7:50-9:35 am at Normandale Community College. Students work in a cohort class of 9th or 10th graders with college professors. After the college classes, students are transported back to Bloomington’s Jefferson or Kennedy High Schools to complete the remaining periods of their school day where they can participate in honors and/or Advanced Placement course.

DA HS Humanities:
DA High School Humanities offers an accelerated path for students using Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses.  This pathway allows students to take highly rigorous college-level curriculum which is taught at college level pacing. Students work in a cohort class and take compacted AP social studies and  English classes, and are dual enrolled in college writing classes. The courses are taught by Bloomington teachers who have specialized training in AP curriculum and differentiation for gifted learners and have been credentialed by the College Board or a local college.  Members of the cohort are transported between Bloomington’s Jefferson or Kennedy High Schools.

Dimensions Academy High School is looking for high ability students entering 9th grade in the fall of 2019 who are interested in challenging themselves.

Please review the program’s eligibility requirements and apply online at bloomingtonschools.org/DAHS

Online applications are due Friday, Feb. 8, 2019.

5 Research-Backed Studying Techniques

5 Research-Backed Studying Techniques Teachers can guide students to avoid ineffective studying habits in favor of ones that will increase their learning outcomes. By Edward Kang, April 4, 2019 https://www.edutopia.org/article/5-research-backed-studying-techniques Too often people imagine that long hours of studying are the best path to being a model, straight-A student. Yet research shows that highly successful students actually spend less time studying than their peers do—they just study more effectively. Teachers can help all students learn to more effectively use the time they spend studying by sharing research-proven techniques. STUDY LESS, WITH GREATER INTENSITY In this era of social media and digital distractions, many students—and adults—do a lot of multitasking. But there is no such thing as successful multitasking, because much of the time spent is wasted on context switching, where the brain has to restart and refocus. Consider the formula “work accomplished

G-Squared. Supporting Your Gifted LGBT Student

A parent recently shared this article with me and I thought I'd post it here to share with other parents, teachers, etc. https://www.sengifted.org/post/g-squared-supporting-your-gifted-lgbt-student G-Squared. Supporting Your Gifted LGBT Student Updated:  Jan 29, 2019 By Alessa Keener. We live in unprecedented times, where many Americans can proudly and safely live as out lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. One measure of progress is in the number of states that have marriage equality –15 states as of today and the District of Columbia. Despite the many positive steps our country continues to take to overcome discrimination and crimes against LGBTQ people, concerns still exist about the safety of our young people and their coming out process. Substance abuse, self-injury, homelessness, and suicide affect a disproportionate number of youth who identify as LGBT. When children grow up both gifted and LGBT, they oftentimes experience a
