Distance Learning Update for DA 10

 Dear DA 10 families,

The BPS School Board voted unanimously on Monday to begin the school year using the distance learning (DL) model for students.

If you registered for hybrid or hybrid flex your student will be placed in the classes they registered for originally and will take them distance for the start of the year.  The school board did not decide for how long we would stay in distance learning for the 2020-21 school year.  What’s good about this decision for our program is that GT students in humanities will get to stay with their cohort.

If you registered for the Bloomington Online School you will be guaranteed online instruction all year.  However, both high school principals have informed me that they are not staffing any AP or honors courses through BOS.  Therefore if you are in DA Humanities and you also wanted your student to be in honors math and science you should register for DL.  Similarly if you are in DA STEM and you also wanted your student to be in honors English and AP World History you would register for DL.

If your student is in DA Humanities and has social studies with me, they can stay in the DA section regardless of whether the student is in DL or BOS.

If your students is in DA STEM they are taking their classes on Zoom and doing online classes through NCC.  They will get to stay together as a cohort and their classes start on Monday.

Given the school board’s recent decision, if a family would like to request withdrawal from the Bloomington Online School, we ask that they complete this form today ( Thursday, August 20).  Families who request withdrawal from BOS will be re-enrolled in their prior school and will give up their place in BOS for the remainder of this school year. Families will be unable to request rejoining BOS later in the school year.

Please email Director Boltik if you have any questions.  Again, I appreciate your patience as we are trying to negotiate this complex school year.

Sincerely,

Meredith

May 18, 2020 Dear DA STEM 9th and 10th graders and their parents/guardians, Congratulations on completing spring semester at Normandale in the Dimensions Academy STEM program.  You excelled in your college coursework - during a pandemic and when all instruction was moved online!  Roger and I were very impressed with how hard you worked under these new learning conditions. Additionally, we were thrilled to see how well the Normandale professors adjusted their teaching to online.  We were happy with the level of rigor they were able to maintain.   Grades:   I am pleased to announce that everyone in both cohorts earned As and Bs in their college classes this semester.  Normandale is offering their students the opportunity to take their classes pass/fail but my recommendation for you is to take your grade.  There are 2 benefits to taking your grade:  1.  It is doubtful that 4 years from now colleges will give you credit for ...

Parents, guardians and students interested in the Nobel Program at Kennedy High School are invited to attend an information session at KHS on  Tuesday, February 4th at 7pm in Kennedy Media Center (9701 Nicollet Ave in Bloomington).   ********** Nobel is an honors humanities pathway designed to nurture and develop the creativity of high school students and is housed at John F. Think Before You Post

Harvard College recently rescinded admissions offers to at least ten prospective members of the Class of 2021 after the students traded sexually explicit memes and messages that  targeted minority groups in a private Facebook group chat. Last week I took a group of DA9th graders to Macalester College and the admissions officer told us they were looking for students that are both academically talented AND empathetic to others.   Please think before you post but also think about how you portray yourself.   http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2017/6/5/2021-offers-rescinded-memes/
