DA STEM announcement

Dear DA STEM students & parents,
I met with the director of GT services and both high school principals today. DA STEM students are welcome to work at Jefferson or Kennedy next week periods 1 and 2.  Jefferson students can work independently in the cafeteria with Roger and Kennedy students in C101 (my classroom) with me.  STEM students who are also in DA Humanities who are dropped off early at KHS can also work in my room.  Please don't report to the media centers because these spaces might already be full next week.  Thank you and I'll keep you in the loop with further updates.

Seeing our kids learning!

I had the opportunity to see DA STEM 10th graders use tilt ,  seismic , and gas data from volcanos today.  It was great to see our students thinking as real geologists!   Later on I got to observe our new DA Honors 9 English class where they worked at stations to analyze short stories for illusion, personification, symbolism, irony, conflict, imagery, and characterization.  They did a great job applying these concepts in their small group discussions and digging into the texts! I look forward to more opportunities to see our students learning.

Gifted advocacy is an education

Gifted advocacy is an education 9/9/2019 (to see the original post click the link above) Gifted advocacy is a mixed bag. It is also an education. Advocacy, that unexpected, uninvited guest in the lives of a gifted child's family, is thrust upon them with little warning. Parents of gifted children find that they must educate themselves about giftedness -  and that   it falls upon them  to speak up for their child's needs. They must grasp the enormity of their child's intellectual and social/emotional needs (and sometimes,  twice-exceptional  challenges); assess the local school's limitations, the community's resources, and the state's gifted ed regulations and laws; and decide how to proceed with their child's schooling. Parents of gifted children receive a fast-track education into the world of giftedness and quickly develop a surprising level of expertise.
