Don’t let your child’s exceptional gifted education stop in middle school

Bloomington Public Schools has developed an innovative approach to gifted education at the high school level through Dimensions Academy High School.  Students can apply to be in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and/or the Humanities (English and Social Studies) strands.

DA HS STEM:
DA High School STEM is a partnership with Normandale Community College to provide an early college experience for 9th and 10th grade students who have exceptional academic skills and are ready for highly rigorous college-level curriculum prior to their eligibility for PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options) in grades 11-12.  This original program allows students to college from 7:50-9:35 am at Normandale Community College. Students work in a cohort class of 9th or 10th graders with college professors. After the college classes, students are transported back to Bloomington’s Jefferson or Kennedy High Schools to complete the remaining periods of their school day where they can participate in honors and/or Advanced Placement course.

DA HS Humanities:
DA High School Humanities offers an accelerated path for students using Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses.  This pathway allows students to take highly rigorous college-level curriculum which is taught at college level pacing. Students work in a cohort class and take compacted AP social studies and  English classes, and are dual enrolled in college writing classes. The courses are taught by Bloomington teachers who have specialized training in AP curriculum and differentiation for gifted learners and have been credentialed by the College Board or a local college.  Members of the cohort are transported between Bloomington’s Jefferson or Kennedy High Schools.

Dimensions Academy High School is looking for high ability students entering 9th grade in the fall of 2019 who are interested in challenging themselves.

Please review the program’s eligibility requirements and apply online at bloomingtonschools.org/DAHS

Online applications are due Friday, Feb. 8, 2019.

New GT Coordinator

I wanted to take this time to tell you that I have stepped down as the high school gifted and talented coordinator for next fall. I have worked with the GT dept since 2012 and I have loved growing as a teacher by working with this departement, GT students and their families. I am really excited that I was a part of expanding our program to both high schools and to junior year. This pandemic has been hard on all of us and I have decided to return to the classroom full time next year. I will continue to teach the DA 9 and 10 social studies classes at Kennedy. Your students will be in great hands! Lisa Kiner, who is a DA teacher at OGMS, will be our new high school GT coordinator. She has a lot of experience as a teacher and as a parent which will help her serve our students well! Please welcome Lisa in the fall into this new role. I will just be an email away so please always feel like you can reach out! I hope your school year is wrapping up well and that you'll have a...
