KHS AP testing info for DA HS students

Ms Brown (kbrown@isd271.org) is our AP Coordinator. If you have follow up questions be sure to email her. You can CC me so I can learn the answer too. DA STEM students will take their tests through KHS even though you take your class at JHS. The plan for testing is: AP Human Geography (May 4th) - in person AP Computer Science (May 17th) - in person AP Environmental Science (May 27th) - in person or at home if you are DL AP Comparative Politics (May 28th) - in person or at home if you are DL If you are a DL and don’t want to come into school on May 4th or May 17th then you need to communicate with Mr. Lang. The digital exam for AP Human Geography will be on June 8th and the digital exam for AP Computer Science will be on Wednesday May 26th. If you are absent or unable to take an exam during our scheduled time, you can sign up to test in the next testing window. You will need to let Ms. Brown know as soon as possible if this happens. She can only sign you up for the next window up until 7 days before the exam. There is even a 4th testing window in June for kids who miss the 1st three windows, so there are many chances to make up missed exams. The AP Digital Testing app has been loaded onto all chromebooks. This app is needed for all students who are taking at-home digital exams. There are practice exams that all students can take, whether you are taking digital exams or not. To log into the app, you need to log out of your chromebooks, then use the apps in the bottom left hand corner. You should log in using their AP Classroom login information. Anyone taking digital exams must log into the app and make sure it is set up on their chromebook. Ms. Brown is finding out that many kids signed up for their AP Classroom accounts in September using emails they no longer use or have access to. We have been told that you should verify your email address in your AP Classroom accounts because don’t want you to miss any important information from Ms. Brown or the College Board. FAQs: How much does this cost? The tests are $51 a piece. However they are free for students who are Free and Reduced Lunch. We also have scholarships available at Kennedy. We don’t want the cost to be prohibitive to any one. Is my student registered? Ms. Brown and I have registered all the DA kids to take the exam however you can choose to opt out of any AP exam. What are the benefits of AP testing? If you student earns a 3, 4 or 5 on the exam they have the opportunity to earn college credit. It is a way to distinguish your student from other applicants in the college admissions process. It is a way for students to see if they mastered the content and to push themselves.

Why You Should Not Use Gifted Students as Tutors

I recently read this article and I think it's really interesting. I think the assumption that all bright students can be tutors is flawed. I think this will be an interesting piece to discuss with teachers. Meredith Why You Should Not Use Gifted Students as Tutors BY LISA VAN GEMERT LEAVE A COMMENT Gifted students should not be used as tutors for other students as standard practice. This should not be a controversial statement, and yet somehow it is. Gifted children should not be used as short little mini-teachers for other students for a number of reasons, not the least of which is they’re not good at it. Even if someone is unconcerned with what is fair or best for the gifted child him- or herself, the gifted child is not the ideal tutor. If we do concern ourselves with what is fair or best for gifted children, we must accept that the gifted child deserves more than that out of their education. While I’m the first to admit that teachers have more responsibility on them ...

The day before we talked through the roadmap to highly selective colleges and we discussed an article titled "9 ways to show college admissions you're a winner" to get them thinking about what they'd want ...
