Conference for Latinx Students at the U of M to promote college


This is a conference that promotes college attendance to Latinx high schoolers. There will be various workshops that students can attend throughout the day. The workshops are designed by Latinx college students with the purpose of answering some of the questions they had as high schoolers. All high school grades are welcome.

8:30am - 9am - check-in
9am - 10:15am - session 1
10:20am- 11:05am- session 2
11:10am - 11:55am - lunch
12am - 12:45pm - session 3

Workshops to Choose From!

1.Applying for Colleges- Learn what the college application process looks like.

2. Choosing a college- What should I look for when I am looking at colleges? Does it matter what college I go to? How do I know I am choosing the right college? This workshop will give you a lot of tips on how to go about choosing a college.

3.Choosing a Major- What is a major? How do I choose a major? Can I not know my major? Get these questions and more questions about majors answered at this workshop.

4.Getting Involved in College- This workshop will talk about different ways you can get involved on campus while you’re in college and the importance of getting involved.

5.Time Management- College is a lot of work, how do you stay on top of it all? Come to this workshop and learn how some current college students manage their time effectively so you can be ready for college.

6.Surviving College- Get all the stories and tips on how to survive college and make college a great experience.

7. How do I pay for college?- Meet with students who work for the University of Minnesota’s student finance assistance office (OneStop). Learn how you can pay for college and what financial resources are available for you as a college student.

8. What is a business major? Get a chance to talk to students from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Learn about some resources that the college offers and what their experience is like as Latinas. Learn what it is like to be a business major and if it is right for you.

9. What is Pre-Med? Interested in going into the Medical Field? At this workshop get a chance to talk to University of Minnesota Medical Students.

10. What is a Liberal Arts Major? Not sure what a Liberal Arts degree is? Want to know what you can do with a Liberal Arts degree? Is Liberal Art degree right for you? Come talk to some Liberal Art majors on what their experience with Liberal Arts and some of their plans with their degrees.

11. What is a STEM major? A chance to do a Q and A with some members of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) UMN. They will talk about opportunities science and engineering have and how they find interest in it. They will answer any general questions about STEM majors and college life as a STEM major.

Why You Should Not Use Gifted Students as Tutors

I recently read this article and I think it's really interesting. I think the assumption that all bright students can be tutors is flawed. I think this will be an interesting piece to discuss with teachers.
